We
are deeply indebted to the Scottish Cultural Heritage Unit for their
encouragement and support, and in particular to Andrew McDougall
for his research and preparation of the major part of the text.
That we have been able to publish this material is due entirely
to the enthusiasm and efforts of the second year BA Publishing students
at the Department of Print Media, Publishing and Communication,
Napier Polytechnic of Edinburgh and to the generosity of Messrs
Wiggins Teape Paper who supplied the paper, Messrs George Stewart
& Co who undertook the printing and to Messrs Hunter & Foulis
for binding the booklet. We also wish to express our thanks to Peter
White, the staff at the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh
Central Library, Edinburgh University Library, Huntly House Museum,
Edinburgh University Press, and the National Portrait Gallery for
their assistance in assembling the illustration for the text.
Finally, we wish to record our sincere appreciation to the many
other helperstoo numerous to mentionwho must remain
anonymous but without whose contributions and encouragement this
project would not have developed.
R. Thomson, Chairman
J. C. Keppie, Secretary
